Lemon Law for Farm Equipment Awaits Governor’s Signature in South Dakota

“Why did yet another state legislature pass yet another law dealing with how I do business?”

It is a question we hear often from members. Sometimes, the answer is complicated by the competing interests of groups hoping to influence the bill, which is the case with the lemon law legislation now pending in Arkansas.

But this week, we have an example worth looking at because of its simplicity. It involves one farmer, one piece of equipment with multiple failures, and one state representative willing to listen. And now, we are just one signature away from adding South Dakota to the list of states adopting lemon laws covering certain farm machinery.

On Monday, the South Dakota State Senate gave final approval to such a piece of legislation. Below are the basics of the new South Dakota law. Find the full text at FarmEquip.org/SD-Lemon

The Association will continue to monitor all state legislation that could affect members, but we need your help.

It’s key that you not only know your local representatives but that they also know and value you and your company as an important part of their community.

The relationship needs to be strong enough that when a new bill is introduced, their first thought is “How will this affect my friend who manufacturers equipment in my district?”
