U.S. Steel Corp. Restarts Idled IL Plant
U.S. Steel Corp. has taken the first steps needed in order to restart its Granite City Works plant in Granite City, IL, local union officials said. But it’s unclear just when the idled steel mill will be back to full production, the St. Louis Post Dispatch reported.
About 100 steelworkers have been called back to work, said Dan Simmons, president of United Steelworkers Local 1899, which represents most workers in the steel complex.
Granite City Works, one of Granite City’s largest employers, makes steel used in construction, automobiles and many other industries. Citing a drastic drop in steel demand, U.S. Steel idled the mill in December and laid off most of the workers. About 1,600 people were put out of work.
