Tractor Sales For ‘09 Surged In India

Over 342,000 tractors were sold in India last year, making it the number one tractor market in the world, Agriculture Online reports. In North America over 260,000 were sold last year and 250,000 machines in all of Europe.

In comparison, in the early 1980’s, just over 50,000 tractors were sold annually in that country. Of India’s tractor market, just over 50% are medium-sized machines in the 30 to 40 horsepower range. Another roughly 25% of the market consists of tractors under 30 horsepower, with the remainder of the market going to what the Indian marketers call “large tractor” that are 40 to 50 horsepower.
