Suing Customers For Bad Product Reviews?
Business Insider reports there are a growing number of defamation suits being filed as the result of consumers posting bad reviews online of a company’s products or services. The reputations of many businesses, and even farm equipment manufacturers, can be made or broken in just a few keystrokes. The lawsuits could set a troubling precedent on whether the courts side with the reviewers or the businesses.
If people lose the right to comment freely on online forums and review sites, then customers rights to free speech are being limited. If however, reviewers prevail, businesses could potentially be destroyed by people making false accusations online, which are likely to appear during a search of a brand or company name.
While some businesses have won large awards for their troubles, others lose and are met with media backlash because it’s perceived they’re trying to “silence” customers.
Most of the comments we see regarding the equipment our members manufacturer are positive, we do see from time-to-time a forum where less than positive remarks are made. In those cases, we do make our member company aware of the post.
