California Ag Policy Under Fire

During Missouri Farm Bureau’s annual meeting, the state’s Attorney General is quoted as saying “I don’t believe voters in California should be able to set agricultural policy in Missouri, so my office is preparing to sue California in federal court.”

The California law, spearheaded and backed by the Humane Society of the United States, will create a new unfunded mandate not just for California egg producers, but for any egg producer looking to sell within California’s borders. This appears to be a blatant violation of the U.S. commerce clause, which is intended to prevent a state from establishing discriminatory or protectionist trade policies that benefit their own state, while harming others.
