NCGA Responds to Movement to Reclassify Glyphosate
Chip Bowling, president of the National Corn Growers Association, issued a statement last week in response to a movement by the International Agency for Research on Cancer to reclassify glyphosate as a class 2A probable carcinogen.
In his statement, Bowling said this move to reclassify the herbicide “ignores findings of more than four decades of credible scientific research” and “creates unnecessary fear and confusion over the proven safety record of this important agricultural tool.”
Bowling added,“It is irresponsible to reclassify glyphosate in such a capricious manner as this decision both creates panic and has the potential to impact access to one of farmers’ main methods of combatting weeds.”
He also noted the political attacks on glyphosate and urged the IARC to release the scientific evidence behind its claims and to reconsider the “overwhelming scientific studies supporting the product’s safety.” S
