Ag Commissioner Celebrates the Deep Fried and Sugary

A Texas politician has stepped up to defend deep-fried food in schools.

Sid Miller is the newly appointed Agriculture Commissioner in Texas. He announced in April he wants to overturn current state regulations that ban deep-fat frying and certain carbonated beverage sales in schools. He believes current school-nutrition regulations are too burdensome.

“It’s about giving back local control and allowing each school district to make the best decision for their community,” he said in a statement. “It’s not about french fries, it’s about freedom.”

The proposal is open for public comment now, but the commissioner has the ultimate autonomy to amend school-nutrition rules.

The move suggests a pattern in Miller’s first months in office. In January, he announced “amnesty for cupcakes,” opening the door for parents to bring cupcakes and cookies to school parties. S
