USDA Will Reassess Crops
Last week, on the same day the USDA released its annual acreage report, it announced plans to reassess crops in four states affected by recent volatile weather.
The National Agricultural Statistics Service, a division of the USDA, said it will reassess cotton crops in Texas, soybeans in Missouri and Arkansas, and sorghum and soybeans in Kansas.
The service said that some states saw the wettest spring in history this year, while others continue to battle drought. Some of the most extreme weather arrived after the USDA assessed acreage, which affected the validity of the data.
The USDA publishes monthly supply-and-demand estimates used as benchmarks in the marketplace. The numbers help farmers, businesses, and governments define the fundamental conditions in commodity markets.
If the reassessments leads to changes in the forecasts, the USDA will release the updates in its Crop Production Report on August 12.
