Comment Line Open on Overtime Pay
The Obama administration last week announced a proposed rule that would more than double the salary threshold for guaranteed overtime pay to $50,440. The current threshold is $23,660.
In the shortline industry, the employees most likely to be affected by the rule are outside sales professionals.
The proposed rule has long been anticipated. Liberal economists welcome it while conservative lawmakers oppose it. These divergent opinions will play out in coming weeks as the Department of Labor invites comments to the proposed rule. The deadline to comment is September 4, although it is subject to extension if the debate calls for it.
The Association’s employment attorneys will discuss the issue in the next Shortliner. Then we will seek members’ feedback on the rule and draft comments on behalf of members to the DOL. S
