ASABE Announces Adoptions, Revisions

The American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) has completed its adoption, with deviations, of ISO 12934:2013, Tractors and machinery for agriculture and forestry–Basic type–Definitions.

The new ASABE standard, ANSI/ASAE S390.6 (ISO 12934:2013), replaces ANSI/ASAE S390.5, Definitions and Classifications of Agricultural Field Equipment, which was used as a key basis document for the development of ISO 12934.

Under ordinary circumstances, designation of an ASABE’s adoption of an ISO document would include the ISO document number. In this case, however, the original ASABE designation has been retained because S390 is referenced within the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations.

ASABE has also revised its adoption of ISO 26322-1:2008, a standard on agricultural tractor safety that was originally adopted in 2012.

The revised standard, ANSI/ASABE AD26322-1:2008 NOV2016, Tractors for agriculture and forestry–Safety–Part 1: Standard tractors, was revised to update format and normative references. A typo in the original document’s normative references was also corrected.

Finally, the ASABE has initiated the national adoptions of two ISO standards for agricultural equipment symbols.

The standards are ISO 3767-1:2016, Tractors, machinery for agriculture and forestry, powered lawn and garden equipment–Symbols for operator controls and other displays, Part 1: Common symbols and Part 2: Symbols for agricultural tractors and machinery. These ISO standards were revised in 2016 and will replace earlier versions of the ISO documents initially adopted by ASABE in 2006. Adoption of the 2016 ISO standard versions will make available on the national level many new symbols utilized internationally.
