EPA Proposes Fuel Volumes

The Environmental Protection Agency recently released proposed volume requirements for cellulosic biofuel, advanced biofuel and total renewable fuel for calendar-year 2018. EPA also released biomass-based diesel volume requirements for calendar-year 2019.

Major provisions of the proposed requirements include:

  • Reducing the advanced biofuel and total renewable fuel volume requirements by the same amount as the cellulosic biofuel volume requirement;
  • Setting a cellulosic ethanol biofuel volume requirement of 238 million ethanol-equivalent gallons for 2018;
  • Reducing the statutory applicable volume of advanced biofuel to a proposed volume requirement of 4.24 billion gallons for 2018, 40 million gallons lower than 2017;
  • Leaving the applicable volume of biomass-based biodiesel for 2019 at the same level as 2018—2.1 billion gallons.

The National Corn Growers Association praised the rule for keeping the Renewable Fuels Standard “on track for conventional ethanol production.”

The American Soybean Association, says the lack of growth in the biomass-based diesel volumes is “a missed opportunity for the administration to demonstrate its support.”
