On the Way in Ag Tech:
Sensors on Corn Plants

A professor of electrical and computer engineering at Iowa State University is building tiny sensors to attach to plants that will allow farmers to monitor the movement of water from soil to roots to leaves.

The sensor is among others being developed by Professor Liang Dong and his colleagues. Their work includes soil sensors to monitor nitrogen in the field, transpiration sensors to measure water loss, and wearable sensors to detect volatiles emitted from the plant.

The sensors have the potential to save farmers money and increase yields, Dong said.
