Ag Reps in D.C. This Week Will Call for End to Trade War
Ag industry leaders will join with manufacturers and other business representatives on Capitol Hill later this week to deliver a message to lawmakers that the time is now to increase pressure on Trump and his administration to end the trade war.
This week’s fly-in will feature more than 100 farmers and business representatives from across the country who will call for congressional oversight hearings on the tariffs’ widespread effects. The advocacy effort, which is being organized by the group Tariffs Hurt the Heartland, will also include release of a new study examining how different tariff scenarios will impact jobs, American families and the economy.
The push comes weeks before the March 1 deadline for the U.S. and China to reach a trade truce. A White House statement issued after negotiations wrapped up in Washington last week pointed to big differences between the two sides. It also reiterated that tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods will rise to 25 percent if no deal is reached.
The lobbying push is also aimed at emphasizing how additional duties on top of those already in place will magnify the effects on farmers and manufacturers.
