Oh, the Irony: Union Thwarts Workers’ Effort to Unionize

The union that has been central to the “Fight for $15” minimum wage movement made headlines recently for not paying its field organizers $15 an hour and resisting workers’ effort to unionize.

Field organizers for the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), who directed the fast food strikes that called for the $15 minimum, do not themselves earn that much. They are on salaries that often equate to less than $15 an hour.

And, when the field organizers sought union representation, the SEIU resisted. By routing funding through local communities, the union avoids the formal obligation to bargain with its organizers, and the SEIU has refused requests from the Union of Union Representatives (UUR) to bargain directly. The SEIU apparently believes that a $15 minimum wage and a union would hurt its own operations.
