On the Agenda in KC:Discussion on Towed Implements

Any Association member who manufactures equipment that may be towed on public roadways is invited to participate in the Towed Implement Council meeting at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, at the Fall Convention in Kansas City.

Committee chairman Jim Hellbusch said in addition to electing Council leadership, the meeting will focus on these topics:

  • Definitions and classifications of ag equipment
  • ASABE standard S390—Classification of Agricultural Field Equipment
  • The need to distinguish between ag machinery and heavily over-the-road motor vehicles such as trucks and trailers
  • Towed implements by vehicles not defined as ag equipment (The misuse of towing agricultural implements behind motor vehicles is being addressed by a joint AEM/FEMA Working Group.)
  • An exploration of the complex questions and design issues that need to be addressed by the Working Group to
define an implement configuration that can be safely towed behind.
  • Lighting and marking of ag equipment. In a January 2015 survey of FEMA and AEM members, 65% indicated that there is a need for improved lighting and marking. The AEM/FEMA Working Group is making a video of lighting and marking on ag machinery in an effort to identify opportunities for improving the visibility of ag machinery on public roadways and how Association members can contribute to this effort.
