Should You Put Your Old Computers Out To Pasture?

Just because your older computers are still working fine, doesn’t mean you can count on keeping them running past August of 2014. That’s the date Microsoft claims it will drop support for Windows XP. A recent article in Information Week makes it clear that upgrading the operating system (OS) to Windows 7, will not be the answer, old hardware and many crusty old applications, simply can’t meet the demands of Windows 7.

If XP really does ride off into the sunset in less than three years, the author of the article believes the technology industry is going to see a boom of activity in the near future. That might be great news for PC sales, Windows licenses, and applications developers but not such a welcomed development for users who feel forced to replace systems that are still working. ◆
