Mexico Swine Industry Takes A Big Hit, Sales Down 80%

Mexico’s swine industry was hit harder than in the U.S., after the publicity surrounding the H1N1 influenza outbreak, Brownfield Ag News reports. In the two weeks after the discovery of H1N1 was announced, Mexican pork sales fell by an estimated 80%. And according to the American Soybean Association, that will eventually impact U.S. soybean producers. The Mexican swine industry uses about 350-thousand tons of U.S. soymeal annually.

The Swine Producers Association of Mexico, with support from the Mexican federal government, will begin a pork promotion campaign in an attempt to bring consumption back to normal levels.
