Push To Increase Minimum Wage Rate
The New York Times reports that the White House, labor unions and liberal advocacy groups are planning an effort to raise the federal minimum wage to $10.10 an hour in a three step process over a two-year period, and then index it to inflation. In addition to the federal push, labor unions and the like are looking at a campaign to place state-level minimum wage proposals on the ballot in states with hotly contested congressional races.
The minimum wage will rise in 13 states this month and as many as 11 states and Washington, D.C., expected to consider increases in 2014. On January 1, state minimum wages will be higher than the federal requirement of $7.25 an hour in 21 states, up from 18 two years ago.
